How Much Money Does Rihanna Make? (Salary & Net Worth)

Rihanna is one of the more popular international R&B singers today. Since her first album release in 2005, with the hit single “Pon de Replay,” she has gone on to release seven more albums. She has released one new album a year since 2005, only missing 2008 when she released a remix of Good Girl Gone Bad.

Early Life

Rihanna hails from St. Michael Parish in Barbados, where she was born on February 20 in 1988. Her full name at birth was Robyn Rihanna Fenty.  She has two younger siblings; her mother is an accountant and her father is a warehouse supervisor. Her home life during childhood was not pleasant. Her father was an abusive addict, which hurt her parent’s marriage. They eventually divorced when Rihanna was 14.

Singing as an Escape

Rihanna began to sing as an outlet for escaping her troubled home life. She and two school friends put together a girl group at the age of 15. They were fortunate enough to get an audition for Evan Rodgers, a prominent music producer, who happened to be visiting their island. He was blown away by Rihanna’s talent and by the time she was 16, she had left the island to record a demo album with Rogers.

The Start of a Career

Rogers was able to schedule an audition for Rihanna with Jay-Z of Def Jam Records early in 2005. Despite her initial nervousness, she once again rose to the occasion and wowed Jay-Z. He immediately had her sign a contract right there. In August 2005, her first single, “Pon de Replay,“ ranked second on the Billboard chart. Music of the Sun, which was her first album, was released shortly afterwards.

Her Career Moves Forward

Rihanna quickly followed up her debut album with her second in 2006. With the two singles “Unfaithful” and “SOS,” A Girl Like Me was a great success. The single “SOS” topped the charts as her first No. 1 single.  With her 2007 album, Rihanna decided to change her appearance and attitude. She was no longer the teen pop star, but a sex symbol and full-blown superstar. The title, Good Girl Gone Bad, proclaimed her change in approach to her music. She won her first Grammy for the single “Umbrella” from this album. From there, she went on to release her fourth album, Rated R, in 2009. Her fifth album, Loud, was released in 2010, and 2011 saw Talk That Talk, her sixth album. Her last album to date, released in 2012, was Unapologetic.

Net Worth and Salary

Rihanna’s net worth as of 2012 was $75 million dollars. Her annual salary for 2012 was $53 million dollars. Album sales and tours are the bulk of her salary. She also appeared in the movie Battleship and released her second perfume, which also contributed to her salary.

Rihanna went from being a young girl singing to escape a troubled home life to becoming a veteran artist with eight albums under her belt in about eight years.
