Former undisputed heavyweight champion, Michael Gerard Tyson aka Mike Tyson, is the youngest boxer to win many heavyweight titles. He was nicknamed as “Iron Mike”, “Kid Dynamite” and “The Baddest Man on the Planet”. Mike Tyson was notoriously popular for his vicious and aggressive boxing style and not to forget, his intimidating behavior in and out of the ring.
Mike Tyson was born in NYC in Brooklyn to mother Lorna Tyson and father Jimmy Kirkpatrick. Tyson’s father, Jimmy abandoned his family when he was around 2 years old and left mother Lorna to take care of the family. Due to financial difficulties, the family moved to Brownsville when Mike Tyson was 10 yrs old. Tragedy struck again and Tyson lost his mother when he was 16 years old. His legal guardian and father figure, Cus D’Amato, who was also his trainer and boxing manager, took care of Mike Tyson since then.
Mike Tyson grew up in a neighborhood which was heavy on criminal activity. Tyson being small and shy was often a target of bullying. As a resort against this, Mike Tyson started developing and practicing his own technique and style of fighting which was instrumental in aggravating him into criminal advances so much so that he was arrested 38 times at a small age of 13. This ended him up in Tryon School for Boys which was at Johnstown, New York.
Tyson started boxing at a young age where he holds the Junior Olympic record for quickest knockout in just 8 seconds. He also won every Junior Olympic Game by quick knockouts. He made his debut in professional fighting at the age of 18 yrs where he won in the first knockout round. His piles of win of 26 out of 28 fights won him the much needed media attention and was also proclaimed as the next best heavyweight champion. Tyson won the title of WBC heavyweight championship at the age of 20 years and 4 months to become the youngest heavyweight title holder in history.
When his career was at peak, Tyson amassed almost $300 million fortune. A divorce, a spat with longtime trainer and mentor Kevin Rooney, a rape allegation and 3 year conviction to ripping off his opponent’s ear were all the downtrends in the career of Mike Tyson. Due to misfortunes and wrong doings, he lost all his fortune and filed for bankruptcy in the year 2003. He retired in 2005 but bounced back to fame with his media appearances, TV shows and movie roles. At present, Mike Tyson’s net worth stands at $1 million.
